Verstappen in Disbelief After Shock Pole in Japan: “This Is a Highlight”

Suzuka, April 5, 2025 – by GP Thread

Max Verstappen could hardly believe it himself. Following an unexpectedly dominant performance in qualifying, the reigning world champion claimed pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix – and his reaction said it all.

“This is a highlight. Incredible. Driving on the limit really pays off here,” Verstappen said moments after stepping out of the car.

The Dutchman, who has always thrived at Suzuka, delivered a lap for the ages despite ongoing struggles with the Red Bull RB21 throughout the weekend. Known for his love of fast, flowing circuits, Verstappen once again proved his ability to rise above the car’s limitations.

“Even I’m Surprised”

Clearly emotional, Verstappen admitted he didn’t expect to be on pole.

“Honestly, I’m surprised myself,” he said. “We worked hard to find the right balance in the car, which wasn’t easy – even in qualifying. But step by step it improved, and in the end, it was all about full commitment.”

That commitment resulted in a blistering final run that edged out both McLaren drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The new asphalt at Suzuka appeared to suit Verstappen, who extracted everything he could from the car.

Still, he remains cautious about the race ahead.

“It’s definitely going to be a challenge,” he said, acknowledging the pressure coming from McLaren. “Maybe we’ll get some rain – who knows? I’ll give it everything.”

Pole in Japan may have surprised even Verstappen, but it sets the stage for a thrilling showdown on Sunday.
